The City of Albany is currently accepting applications for the position of Police Officer.

Under general supervision, a Police Officer performs the police function of protecting persons and property, providing law enforcement, maintaining order, controlling traffic, and preventing crime and juvenile delinquency; performs specialized administrative or investigative work, as necessary; and performs related work as assigned.

Job Description:
Police Officer Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Ensures active community policing pursuant to codified department policy and strategies.
Patrols an assigned area by car, bicycle, or on foot; observes, investigates, and reports suspicious and hazardous conditions; apprehends and arrests law violators.
Responds to routine and emergency calls for protection of persons and property, and for the enforcement of city ordinances, state laws, and federal laws.
Investigates crimes, accidents, deaths, and disturbances; gathers evidence; interviews, questions, and takes statements from complainants, suspects, and witnesses; completes reports.
Appears in court to present evidence and testimony in connection with criminal prosecution.
Serves warrants, subpoenas, and other legal documents.
Participates in specialty units including hostage negotiation teams, tactical response team, and other related police specialty units.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
Police procedures including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, and investigation.
Modern police principles, methods, practices, and techniques.
Operational characteristics of police equipment, vehicles, and firearms.
Methods and techniques used in interviewing witnesses, victims, or suspects.
Pertinent federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, with reference to arrest, search and seizure, evidence, and case law.
Ability to:
Properly interpret and make decisions in accordance with circumstances, laws, regulations, and policies.
Use good judgment and make effective, logical decisions under pressure.
Interpret and explain City law enforcement policies and procedures.
Effectively use and qualify with law enforcement tools and weapons including firearms, batons, defensive tactics, and other safety equipment.
Gather, assemble, analyze, evaluate, and use facts and evidence.
Accurately observe and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents, and places.
Control violent people and affect arrests.
Prepare clear and concise reports and routine correspondence.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
High School Diploma or GED 21 years of age or older Valid California Driver's License at time of hire.
Academy Participant/Recent Graduate candidates must also:
Be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a California POST Academy; AND Possess a T-Score of 42.
5 or higher on the California POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery.
POST assessment results are valid within one year (12 months) from the date that the test was administered.
Lateral candidates must also:
Be a current full-time Police Officer; AND Possess a California POST Basic Certificate or Certificate of completion from an accredited California POST-certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy awarded or renewed within the previous consecutive thirty-six months at time of application Selection Process All applications will be reviewed.
The most qualified applicants will be invited to participate in an oral board interview.
Applicants who meet the minimum requirements are not guaranteed advancement through any phase of the process.
